Norwich Diocese Advent Calendar

During Advent 2020, the Diocese of Norwich curated an online Advent Calendar sharing images, experiences and reflections from members of their community. Matthew was asked to write a piece which can be seen below.

Giant Redwoods (Sequoiadendron giganteum) are famous for their great age and size. Yet their life begins in fire and destruction, with the heat of wildfires needed to clear undergrowth and cause their waxy seed pods to burst open and sprout. Some seed pods will wait decades to begin their journey from seedling to the tallest tree on the planet. In 2020, wild fires and disease have burnt through our planet mirroring the anger and discordance in nations. 

Yet as Advent begins, we are seeing the world renew. New trees are sprouting and new vaccines are being found; a renewed hope and harmony is coming to the world.  As a teacher, this shows how small ideas can bring life again to our world; the power in learning to find hope in the darkness.
