GenL - Conrell Notes with Year 1

We are off to a great start with Phase 2 of our Generative Learning trial with a successful deployment of Cornell Notes with Year 1!

The lesson used for the trial was part of their science/geography learning looking at how animals adapt to their hot and cold environments. To start the lesson, the teacher printed out their chosen Cornell Notes template onto an A2 sheet of paper so it could be stuck to a paper flipchart page.

As the class read the story and gained knowledge of meerkats, the teacher modeled how to compile the notes using pictures and key words. It was at this point the teacher had planned the lesson to end. The children had been concentrating for some time and she did not expect them to have the energy for further learning. However, the children were excited by the Cornell Notes model and asked to do a version of their own!

As you can see from the examples below, the template worked for children across a range of abilities. Some are writing in full sentences whilst others in single words as they move beyond early mark making. The most noticeable success is that 5-6 year olds are excited by the idea of making notes to aid their knowledge learning and can use the tools with no additional support.

The teacher plans to repeat the trial again using more than one Notes template to allow more space for writing for some children. Look out for a follow-up post in the coming weeks.
